The Fredericksburg Nationals are honoring a historic chapter in local baseball history during the 2025 season.

During select games, the team will play as the Fredericksburg Frogs—a nod to an all-African American team that captivated the city from 1919 through the late 1930s.

The Fredericksburg Frogs were more than just a baseball team—they played for love, not money. By honoring them in 2025, the FredNats ensure their legacy isn’t forgotten again.

The Original Fredericksburg Frogs: "The World’s Hoppinest Team"

The Fredericksburg Frogs were an amateur African-American baseball team that emerged in 1919, quickly becoming one of Virginia’s most competitive Black teams. Though they were unpaid, their talent and passion for the game drew large, integrated crowds to fields like Gouldman Park.

The Frogs faced off against teams from Richmond, Washington, D.C., and even Pittsburgh, occasionally defeating semi-professional clubs like the Homestead Grays. Their success wasn’t just about baseball—they fostered community pride and broke racial barriers in a segregated era.

For select 2025 home games, the FredNats will transform into the Fredericksburg Frogs, wearing uniforms inspired by the 1920s-30s era. It’s more than a rebrand—it’s a revival of a crucial piece of Fredericksburg’s sports history.
