Are you thinking about moving to the Woodbridge or Dumfries area but aren’t sure where to settle?
In this episode of Give, Work, Play, I’m going to share the pros and cons of living in Potomac Shores, a new resort-style subdivision you’ll want to check out. We’ll explore the community’s amenities and housing options so you can decide if it's the right neighborhood for you.
Welcome To Potomac Shores
Potomac Shores subdivision is a resort-style community located right on the Potomac River. Its
surrounded by stunning scenery and is just about 30 minutes outside of Washington, DC. Let’s look at
some of the top reasons why people love living here.
Potomac Shores has a social committee that loves throwing community parties and social events. It has
the Ali Krieger Sports Complex, a 30-acre sports hub featuring two artificial turf soccer fields with lights
for nighttime play. There’s also a Bermuda grass soccer field for versatility, a softball field, and a
concessions building along with a children’s playground.
Additionally, the community has an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. It’s named one of the
Top 10 Best New Courses in the country by Golf Digest.
Housing Options And Amenities
Several different builders are currently building in Potomac Shores, one of which is Stanley Martin. They
offer a really unique townhome with an optional fourth-level loft and rooftop terrace. Alternatively, you
can opt for a luxury single-family home that has up to seven bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms.
There’s really something for everyone.
Amenities in Potomac Shores are plentiful. In addition to the sports complex, the community has a
beautiful state-of-the-art gym and instructor-led classes for the entire community. Right next to the gym
is another building called The Barn. It’s a really cool place to host a big event if you need a lot of space.
In addition, they offer community activities like cooking classes for residents, held right inside The Barn.
Next to The Barn is a community garden. So if you like gardening but don’t want all the responsibility of
putting it on your own property, you can actually take advantage of the Potomac Shores community
garden.
Family-Friendly Activities
Located near the community garden are a family pool and a kid’s pool. The pools feature fountains and
they have one with eight lanes. So if you want to practice for a swimming competition and perfect your
backstroke, you can certainly do that there, too. I’m sure you can probably get some swimming lessons
in there for the kids if that’s something that you’re interested in.
Potomac Shores also has a snack bar—and I’m not done yet. There are 850 acres of open space for
hiking, biking, walking, parks, and outdoor amenities, including tot lots and playgrounds. They even have
their very own running clubs, so if running is something that you’re interested in, they have that for you.
Additionally, there’s a kids club available to the community. If you want to drop your child off at the kids
club and take some time for yourself, that’s an option for you as well.
Don’t forget outdoor shopping and dining, located nearby at the Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center.
This area is just about 10 miles south of Potomac Shores and provides plenty of family-friendly fun. So if
you want to get out and do something in the evening or go catch a movie, you can find entertainment
right down the road.
The VRE And Marina
Now that we know about all the great things Potomac Shores has to offer, let’s look at some of the not-
so-great things. One of the major cons is that the VRE is not located at Potomac Shores, at least not yet.
It’s one of those things that they’ve been working on, and they’ve been saying it’s coming. They do have
the plans and they’ve been moving a lot of dirt around, but right now that’s about where it’s at.
There’s a little bit of frustration that the VRE hasn’t actually landed at Potomac Shore. Additionally,
there are two other up-and-coming projects: the marina and the Marketplace. This day-to-night town
center is something the town said would be in place, but for now, has yet to come to fruition. And if you
have a boat, you’re going to have to keep looking for where you’re actually going to put it until the
marina is built.
Pro Tips
If you’re waiting for the marina, here’s a little tip for you. Although there’s not a marina at Potomac
Shores right now, if you do have a boat, you can go a little bit north or a little bit south to launch that
vessel. The cool thing is that you’re right on the Potomac River, so you can go all the way north up to DC
or go south.
If you go south, you could visit one of the bars called Rick’s On The River or Tim’s Rivershore, which is
reminiscent of a really beachy, cool environment where you can have a glass of beer and maybe play a
a little bit of beach volleyball.
The second tip I have is that if you enjoy shopping and want a deal, you’re not going to be far from the
Potomac Mills Mall. There, you can find a lot of different discount shops and opportunities as well as a
variety of restaurants and things to do. So while you’re waiting for the Marketplace and marina, you
have the ability to take your boat out or go shopping without traveling very far.
