In Fredericksburg, a remarkable initiative is addressing food insecurity through farming, education, and community collaboration. The Rappahannock Education Farm, operating solely through donations and volunteer efforts, is making a tangible difference in the lives of local residents by providing fresh, nutritious produce to those who need it most.
Give Back Team Members Lending a Hand
The farm's mission resonates deeply with local individuals and teams who are dedicated to giving back. Ginger Walker and Christine McGowan of the Give Back Team recently volunteered their time to harvest vegetables destined for the USO at Quantico, supporting both military families and the wider community.
Addressing a Critical Community Need
The Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank has identified fresh produce as one of the most urgently needed commodities among the populations they serve. Despite high demand, there remains a significant shortage of quality fresh vegetables and fruits available for distribution.
The Rappahannock Education Farm directly addresses this gap by:
Growing a wide variety of seasonal produce specifically for donation
Prioritizing nutrient-rich vegetables to promote balanced diets
Ensuring food pantries and the food bank have a consistent supply of fresh goods
A Harvest of Impact
The farm's output demonstrates a powerful commitment to the community. In a single recent volunteer session, where Give Back Team members Ginger Walker and Christine McGowan helped to harvest over 1,600 pounds of fresh vegetables, including:
330 pounds of tomatoes
125 pounds of butternut squash
Hundreds of pounds of cucumbers and zucchini
This effort contributed to an impressive 2025 total of nearly 19,000 pounds of produce grown and donated to fight hunger across the region. Recent harvests have been delivered to service members and military families at Marine Corps Base Quantico through a partnership with the USO.
Volunteer at the Farm
The Rappahannock Education Farm offers a unique, hands-on opportunity for community members to make a direct impact. Volunteers become active participants in the entire growing process:
Planting seeds
Nurturing plants as they grow
Harvesting ripe vegetables at their peak
And more
The farm plants throughout the year and always welcomes additional volunteers to help sustain its vital mission. No prior gardening experience is necessary, only a willingness to contribute to a meaningful cause.
